Found this flat button today first one I ever found didn't know if there's a way to know how old it is. IMG_20170823_162107605.webpIMG_20170823_162118777.webp

i'd say early 1800s

Sometimes can go by size of a flat button for a approx. date. I use the rule that if the flat button is roughly around the size of a half dollar it pre-dates the early to mid 1790's. If it is roughly the size of a nickel it is probably somewhere between mid 1790's to approx. mid 1840's. Like psexton 1967 mentioned the back mark should narrow it down for you. congratulations.

Congrats on your first flat button. I dug one today as well and love it.I love buttons and especially ones with stamping you can make out to do the research on. Get ya' some more!:headbang:

I see BENEDICT, one of the more prolific button makers from Waterbury, CT. Not sure if it's a plain Benedict or his later gig with Benedict & Burnham but 1830 is just about right.

Very cool and congrats!!!! Certainly looks OLD!!!! :icon_thumleft:

When I started swingin I put a Pop top on my bucket list. Got my first bucket list find in about 45 seconds!!! Nice score

Still searching for that elusive pull tab?

Congrats OP

Just due to the spacing of the words I would guess it to be an "A. Benedict" backmark, 1823-1829. Either way, we all agree of the approximate age.

X2.

And contrary to another member's suggestion that a button can be dated by size, it cannot.
Just going by something I read awhile back. In the early 1790's American manufactured coat buttons went from roughly the size of a half dollar to roughly the size of a nickel.

Congrats on your first!
