Buckle id needed

I found this buckle today on an old road that likely dates back to Colonial times. I am new to metal detecting & know very little about buckles. Can someone tell me the approximate age of the buckle and what it was used for? Thanks!

PalmettoPride, what you have found is a bronze shoe buckle and a fancy one at that. Nice save. I've dug a couple in and around the Oldest City.

Yes. Most likely early 1700's. Not sure of the area of the Palmetto State that you found it in, but If you ballpark the region it will lend credence to the timeline.
