That buckle may be from your "cw backyard" but it is from looong after the civil war.

As its extreme thin-ness in comparison to its size suggests, it is a very light-duty buckle. It is intended as a "decorative" knuckle as much as a functional one. I've seen that same form (which could be described as two letter D's jammed together) on everything from cheap wristwatch straps to girls' shoes.
