Bullet Find Help - another find with pics

Hello,

I found a bullet and an arrow head on a friends property in manassas, va. Pretty sure it is a civil war bullet as the property is not too far from the battlefield. I know nothing about civil war bullets so any info would be appriecated.

Yeah, that is a nice high impact Civil War bullet. Looks like a nice quartz arrowhead to. You need to go hit that place again A.S.A.P.

I got a chance to go back to this place. Problem is its actually a relative of a friends house. He has about two acres and he actually made it all his lawn. So, he will not let me dig. He has a little creek running through the corner of his yard and he let me check it out a bit. Thats where I found the bullet and arrow head. I went back this weekend and found one more object that I am pretty sure is a bullet as it feels like lead. Love to hear your comments. I probably will not get the chance to go back for a while as I dont know the guy that well. He lives about a mile north of 66 off 234 (Sudley?).

If he lives anywhere near Sudley Rd 1 - 3 miles north of 66, he's in the battlefield.

It would be a rare opportunity to dig there...

yep. your right! its about a mile or so south of the battlefield not north. Anyway, I was hoping to get comments on the second object I found, confirming it is a bullet.

Put something in the pic to show scale - like a dime or a penny. It may be a fired pistol ball or it may just be a piece of "camp lead".

Okay... since no one has really nailed down your bullet finds I'll jump in here. I have dug over 11,000 CW bullets on over 130 different sites and it appears to me that your first bullet is some variety (there were many) of 58 Cal. or 54 cal. 3 ring "Minie Ball" fired from a rifled musket ... you can see rifling marks on the bullet in the picture... and most likely by a Yankee soldier. As was stated in another post it was a "high-impact" meaning it was fired from close range thus causing a lot of deforming of the bullet when it struck.

The other bullet is most likely a 69 cal. musket ball fired by some Confederate soldier at fairly close range. Can't be sure of the cal. without some other object of known size or a ruler next to it for comparison. It appears to have struck the edge of something when it impacted like a small rock possibly in a somewhat glancing blow or... if you have a more vivid imagination some part of an enemy soldier's accoutrements.

I bet if you check out the surrounding area you will find more bullets and maybe some $$ buttons and other CW relics.
I would do my best to MD any where else around there.

nice finds --the three ring bands around the bullets base can easily be seen in your photo --- 54 or 58 cal most likey union --- nice finds and the location might be the run up area to the main battlefield --- get to know and befreind the land owner -- its great and rare to get to hunt near there.

Good job with getting on the property at all. You may want to try sharing your interest in history with the landowner. Sometimes showing/sharing actual finds goes a LONG way. You may even want to take the bullet, make a small shadow box with possibly a picture of civil war era of the battlefield/The Stone House (intersection of 29&234) and give it to the homeowner. There is a chance they won't care at all and you will be out one bullet, a box, a postcard/picture, and a half hour of work. Then there is a chance that after you give them the relic, and SHOW them how you will carefully dig a "plug", place the dirt on a towel (or frisbee) carefully recover the relic, replace the "plug", tamp it down and show NO signs of it being dug that they will let you continue to search.
I did this exact thing and got the only permission that has ever been given to hunt on a GOOD civil war site.
