My husband and I are new to this, having recently acquired ground over which used to run a well traveled trail (1849-1880s or so) The family who owned it previously had it from 1903 and wasn't interested in history, so we don't think much exploring has been done on it. We did find one bullet with our son's borrowed $50 metal detector (have since bought our own) Our assumption is a Sharp's - can anyone confirm or add more from the photos?

think youre right but Im from New england so really not in my wheel house though I have found Sharps on
more than a few group hunts down south

I should mention that we are in Kansas. From looking at the bullet the outside shape very much looks like a Gardiner. Unlikely but possible based on the location's history. BUT I haven't found any pics online that are flat on the bottom. We've found some pics of sharps that are flat but the outside shape doesn't match up nearly as well. We are learning that there are a lot of possibilities, but would love to identify it as much as is possible these many years later. And hopefully we'll find more treasures on our next excursion. First thing to get now is a micrometer and a scale...it will help a bunch in Bullet I.D.

If i remember right the common sharp rifle the bullet was .52 diameter weight 475 grain
and there was sharp 50/70 rifle bullet was .515 diameter 425 gr or 550 gr ... good luck and double check my info
