why do I find so many burned buttons, did they burn there clothes in 1800's farms?

During the CW it was not uncommon for opposing troupes to burn homesteads after they took what they wanted. It was not uncommon for the Rebs to loot and burn homes that were on their side to keep the Yanks from getting food and tools or whatever.
