Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid towards at the end of their career moved to Argentina. There they bought a ranch in the Chubut valley. This is documented and the location of their ranch is well known. It is reported that they had stolen 672 oz. of gold. The directions to where they hid the gold is as follows. from the ranch go up the middle of a (the) shallow river for 2 miles. then into a ravine with one wall towering 1200 feet and the other wall 500 feet. On one wall, (it doesnt say which) about halfway up is a dry cave. The ingots were wrapped in rawhide and placed in 7/1.1 lb. maple sugar tins ,and placed in a natural depression in the floor and covered with rocks. Aside from your metal detector take along a fly rod,as its some of the best trout fishing in the world not to mention world class scenery. A drone would also take away a lot of the legwork. If you need help liquidating the gold ,I can make some suggestions.

Nice bit of history there! You,re right about the fishing,I,ve never been but read a lot about it.

Here is video below of Butch Cassidy's ranch in the Chubut valley. Local villagers are trying to preserve the building because of its historical significance with Butch Cassidy before it falls down. ( Sorry Amigo clip is in Spanish but you can still ranch and old photographs, )

I should say the building was in poor state in 2015 since then dedicated locals have contributed their efforts to preserve the building with a new shingled roof.

Here is from a distance.

Even follow the directions of 2 miles up the stream you are no closer to figuring out which to peaks the alleged directs refers to? If we look west we have those below.

attachment.php

if we look north we see this mountain range.

attachment.php

We can rule out east as there are no mountain peaks in the east.

If we look south back to Cholila 12km away this is looking south the town is away in the south east just below on the left.

There are a few directions we could rule out. south, south east, East, north east.

But we have 3 contenders from the point 2 miles upstream we have. mountains to the south west, West and North west. All seem have peaks with the heights mentioned and various valleys running into them.

Hola Amigos

Sadly There needs to be more research on the story to establish the facts. That said pretty amazing part of the hold I heard also the fishing is excellent.

Check with the heirs of Miss Place.
Etta hauled that 42 lb bag “O” gold back to San Francisco in her steamer trunk. Gold was distributed among her undisclosed heirs upon her death in 1966. Pinkerton pissed.

why would you hide/bury a cache that far from your house?? no sense at all.. Course, that's just me.

Gidday Amigos all very good valid good points.

It appears when the bought the land grant it was 15000 acres so perhaps they did not want to have any incriminating evidence on their actual property?.

The Sundance Kid's lover Etta Place, settled with the two outlaws on a ranch they had purchased near Cholila in the Chubut Province of southwest Argentina, living in a four-room log cabin on the east bank of the Blanco River. Under a new 1884 law, they were granted 15,000 acres (61 km?) of adjacent land to develop, 2,500 of which belonged to Place, who has the distinction of being the first woman in Argentina to acquire land under the new act, as land ownership had previously been denied to women. Here is Sundance and Etta below.

So the two outlaws perhaps would not have risked any stolen goods or money on their property which happen to be large.

However that is one possibility. But there is many unanswered questions. Nothing is definite as yet.
