Hi; Not sure but I believe the Eagle at the top has a Crest in the Center of it. If you can clean the button using a mix of 50% Lemon Juice & 50% Water let it soak overnight. Then GENTLY use a wooden toothpick to "push" of the loose dirt in a few days you will have a button that is Identifiable ok. It is a One Piece Button. That puts it in the prior to 1820 Date Range ok. After it's cleaned please post pictures of BOTH sides then we can help you much more. Good Luck. PEACE:RONB

Hey Barker, you said above that it's a 1 piece button and is in the 1820s range. Does that apply to just military buttons or one piece buttons in general?

Thanks for the info DCMatt. That's a great explanation in the link on the time periods of buttons.

Barker - thats as cleaned up as I could get it. The patina on it is very brittle and I'm happy with it as is but thanks for the cleaning advice.

Hi Bob; ok. The 2 Piece Button began about 1813. Hence the One piece button was virtually gone, both Military & Civilian by about 1820. Hence your One Piece Button is dated prior to 1820 although there are exceptions to every rule. The One piece was virtually extinct by 1830 due to the popularity of the 2 Piece Button ok. Yours is a One Piece Button ok. PEACE:RONB
