Dig this button today at a homesite located in the woods. It's just bricks on the ground. No modern metal has been dug there and in the last couple weeks I have dug two dimes one 1882 other 1887. So I'm guessing sites from 1880s. Wondering if button is military and what time period? The iron back has me stumped. Thanks for your help. I also found a black powder shotgun out there last week. Is there any way to date them without seeing the markings on the barrel?

Is the first picture one of the button back? Whether it is or isn't, your button is a fashion one. Here is one very similar on the Waterbury website under fashion.

That shot gun barrel is pretty cool. I'd have to go back and look for the rest of it, the locks and trigger guard.... It'll date 1820's to late 1860's but it'll be hard to be any more specific without knowing the maker....
