Maybe this: Federal Marine button, eagle with outspread wings over anchor, Extra Quality dm on ribbon with eagle, (22.3mm) As shown here: Ridgeway Civil War Archive Buttons from Federal Marines
Button depicts 13 stars, eagle with outspread wings over an anchor, symbolism for the Marines. Backmark: "graphic of thee leaves, (star) EXTRA (dot) QUALITY (star)" dm with ribbon, border of ribbon are dots, 1860's manufacture likely by Steele & Johnson, (ExtraQ24). Two part convex button, large coat size.

That looks like it. 1860s. Woulda never guessed I'd find something that old there. Kinda makes me wonder what else might be kicking around there.

I suppose I shouldn't just toss it in with the rest of the nails and junk then. Wondering why I have yet to dig any silver coins yet if this oldie was hanging around

What does the back mark read?

Same as described. Extra quality. Stars. Not sure the order because I'm not looking at it at the moment.

Just correcting a typo

The backmark appears to be "Extra Quality" ...written in large, plain-block lettering ...or so it seems to my eyes in the photo. We'll need the finder, Blskypilot, to confirm the lettering style. If that button is from the 1860s (or earlier) the lettering would be "serifed" letters. Therefore, I think this button is from the final quarter of the 1800s, or perhaps early 1900s.

So I'm looking for a difference in the style of the words? I'll dig it out in the am. See if I can get a better pic in the morning though I did have this other one. Looks blocky to me, stamped into the back. The area does go back that far but even at the early 1900s it's still the oldest thing I've seen a date put on from this yard.
