Just found this yesterday

it is very heavy for a button this sizeView attachment 1607582View attachment 1607581, not sure of material,

it has word double on back maybe for "double gilt"

it has bronze patina in places I and guessing Bronze core

the black patina is strange, and is a permanent coating

just wondering if maybe Gilt can turn black like that

or maybe it was Silver Gilt

“Double Plated” May be what it says, which indicates silver. The term Gilt indicates gold.

What you are calling "black patina" on your brass 1-piece flatbutton is a thin layer of Carbon that got fused to the brass when it was superheated in a fire among ashes. We frequently dig "carbonized" brass buttons out of civil war camp firepits.

Burned Buttons

Thanks
I just found another domed union button close to this one again Carbon on it, it is about 25ft from foundation, do you think these burned buttons is from the fact they burnt their clothes?
