It was realitively deep for the old park and read like a V nickle but the tone was much higher. It's thin and only weighs 1.3g. It had some type cardboard or paper backing and probably an iron part attached to the backing but all that dissolved while cleaning it. Not sure if it originally had been painted green or it's just corrosion. Any ideas?

Fancy dress buttons with pierced gilt brass fronts and contrasting backing (often dark cloth) were popular in the late 1800's. It was a fairly common practice to place a drop of perfume or scented oil on one or two of them, to be absorbed by the fabric within the button.

I have to agree this is most likely. Funny thing is the thing that what you destroyed (accidently) was probably rarer than the button. I once throw away some medieval fabric from between a strapend (won't do that again, but probably never get the chance!) :tongue3:

Nice looking item with even patina.
