Last weekend I discovered a new site with significant potential for early 19th century finds, so I took a few hours on Independence Day morning and dug a bunch of "keepers". Order of finds: brass drawer pull, large flat button, 1809 Classic head half cent, 1917 wheat, next large flat button (identical to the first), small flat button with "Superior Treble Gilt" back mark, and a 1966 Baltimore County dog license tag (brass).

The identical flat buttons (if indeed that's what they are) have a central pattern of rays and a fancy perimeter design. I applied a small amount of lemon juice to bring out a little of the gilt. The half cent was just a foot away from one of these large buttons and I believe digging the button allowed me to hear the coin. The half cent was 9 inches down.

A truly memorable hunt. I have only hunted this site twice now. The first hunt yielded a 3-4 inch iron key, a flat button with back mark "Double Gilt", and a 1953 Roosevelt dime.

The video of the July 4th hunt may be found at my YouTube channel "McDigs Bmore"; check it out.

A half cent is a fantastic find! Looks like a great spot, I bet there's more.

Thx J.Cache! I agree with you. So far 4 flat buttons and the half cent in two hunts. I've kept to the northwest end of this field, covering an area about 20 ft by 150 ft, but I haven't gridded it. Grass is taller than I'd prefer. I think more will come later in the season and when I can get into the woods.

I'm really glad to see you doing so well its a tuff hobby!!! Location Location Location and a little skill and a lot of luck.. Great job my friend. Did you stab Abe Lincoln. I just stabbed George Washington... LOL

Thx Tommy! Abe took one on the chin, it looks like. I like the history of this site; habitation here could have been from the mid-1700s. More to come.

Congrats on some nice finds, looks like potential on more at that site. Good luck

And - neat dog tag!

Nice finds McCdig. That Half Cent is in pretty good shape, and I like the dog tag.

Congrats on the sweet half cent!

Best of luck to you sir!

Looks like a great spot!

Thx gold panner! Nestled in suburbia it appears to be a "gem" so far.

Thx Tom! Hoping for silver!

Thx Trezurehunter! Yes! Old dog license tags are a favorite of mine. Going back early tomorrow AM to hunt the area for a third time.

Thx vpnavy! I haven't had many 3 button hunts....very happy with the results.

Thx Art! The field has a nasty mosquito population and I'm in the grass, so bug spray is in order here. Let's see what else comes up!
