Would love some input on the best button book or internet guide to buttons. I realize they will probably be either military or general (civillian) and not both. Have been digging lots of penny buttons in the area I have been hunting. I often hear them refered to as "Colonial" but realize that they were also used up to and during the Civil War. Often times there is no makers mark and it would be hard to guess but would love to be able to narrow down the age if that is possible. I realize that just a generic button with no marks will be hard, but some of them have rope boarders or stars etc. :icon_thumleft:

For military buttons I believe the standard is Don Troiani's books. If you are looking to aquire one just watch out for the extremely over priced ones. On Amazon a used copy of his American Revolution Buttons book is selling for $999.98 but on Abe Books you can get it for less then $40 and that is shipped to your front door. I can't help with civilian buttons but I would love to hear others input.

Good luck
