I’d probably weight um. You might take um to a person that knows something about gold. Good luck.

Here is a real one for comparison.Screenshot_20181228-220213_Chrome.webp

Notice the difference in the lettering.

Yes they are fakes. These tokens are copies of tokens made for the 50th commemoration of the Sutters Mill gold discovery, and are still regularly produced today. The same for the item posted by laidback4sho.

Time for more coffee.

The best reference for California Fractional Gold coins is “California Pioneer Fractional Gold” by Breen and Gillio. Unless your 1 Dollar and smaller California Gold coins match one of those listed, it is likely a fake. Anything you suspect is genuine should be evaluated by a qualified professional due to the many counterfeits.

I hope this helps.

lots of real ones out there, my favorite is the octgonal 25 cents, what a ridiculous coin!

These were made by so many manufacturers and with so many different dies that you really can't tell authenticity by comparing to a similar piece. There are too many varieties. Now, I would agree that they are probably fake. They are too clean, especially mounted in jewelry. They just don't have the FEEL. It would not surprise me at all if they were real as well. They are a tough bird. In the end, it all is determined by cost. If the cost is low enough, it is worth the risk. For example, if the bracelet is 14k gold and they are asking about the melt value of the chain, it's probably worth taking the leap and finding an expert. If they are asking anything more than melt, I would give it a pass.

Wow. Long time since I heard the name "Walter Breen." Very brilliant, very sick individual. Perhaps the smartest person I've ever met.
