Calling all Civil War Buffs-Cavalry Item?

Today I went to my favorite CW site and hit the fields with the trusted e-trac. The swarms of gnats were thick enough to almost carry me away. Never the less, I found two great finds. The first was a miniball with the rifling groves on it. The second is hopefully where you come in!

My guess is that this is something to do with a cavalry strap. It's made of solid brass and looks like the small end was attached to a leather strap. It has a beautiful green patina on it. Let me know what you think it is or what you know it is.

It is a gag loop, which is horse tack related. That's all I know, someone else ID'ed one for me as such. Your bullet is a Gardner, generally associated with Confederate troops, a very nice one in fact, and I'd be hunting that place pretty good! Good finds and keep it up!
