I am coming up to having 1000 40% halves, and been wondering what to do with them. I have contemplated an idea, but not sure how to figure it out. What I would like to figure out is how many 40% halves would I need to send to Kitco to get my face value back, also get back a 100 oz silver bar and allow for their percentage. Basically trying to figure out how many to send them so I could get all my face value back and a free 100 oz bar.

You will need 6.7613 40% halves to make an ounce of silver, so 676 halves to make 100 ounces. For your face value, you'll need to calculate the remaining 224 halves and the spot price.

Hope this helps put you on the right path, I'm not sure exactly what you're asking? ???

I understand. If you sell the 40%ers at $2.00 each then...

-A 100 ounce bar will cost about $1200. (600 40%ers)
-To get your face value ($300) you will need 150 more 40%ers, but you want this face value back too
-$75 face value = ~32 more 40%ers. But you want the face back for this too...
-$16 face value = ~8 more 40%ers... but you want the face back for this too...
-$4 face valie = ~2 more 40%ers....
- Add in 25 more 40%ers just for good measure...

600 + 150 + 32 + 8 + 2 + 25
=
817 40%ers... give or take 25 more 40%ers for silver value fluctuation.

If you have 1000 40%ers, then you should get your 100 ounce silver bar, all your face value back, plus some extra cash... probably around $200.

OR YOU CAN LOOK AT IT THIS WAY:

$2 for a 40%er, minus face = $1.50 proffit each one.

For a 100 ounce silver bar you still need 600 of them.

Then, if you have 400 left... you get $600 back.... probably less though.

YOU HAVE ENOUGH ALREADY EITHER WAY!!! NICE JOB!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

40% silver halves contain about 0.148 oz silver (1965 to 1970), while 90% (pre-1965) silver halves contain 0.3618 oz silver. The current spot price for silver is a little over $13 per oz.

I don't know what the refining costs would be to have a 100oz. bar created from the coins.

676 40% coins = 100oz. 1 coin is worth $1.96
276 90% coins = 100oz. 1 coin is worth $4.78

Spot price of silver at NY $13.21 x 100oz = $1321

You would probably do best by selling the halves for cash and buying a silver bar from a local source. Refining charges and return shipping costs will cost you more.
