MacArthur park was a US Government Arsenal in 1837 and used
by the Confederates during the Civil War. In 1893 it was donated
to the city for use as a park.

Little Rock hosted the 21st annual United Confederate Veterans
Reunion on May 16 through 18, 1911,

An estimated 6,000 veterans were expected to attend but the
reunion drew more than 140,000 people, including approximately
12,000 veterans, making it the largest event in Little Rock history
until William Jefferson Clinton’s election night in 1992.

The city erected a veterans’ camp at MacArthur Park,

They even had a hot air balloon,

The camp was named for Confederate Colonel Robert Glenn
“Fighting Bob” Shaver of the Seventh Arkansas Infantry, and
Shaver served as commander of the camp during the reunion.

In this photo of soldiers at the reunion, Shaver is the third from
the left on the front row,

I believe this is where the recent finds I made at MacArthur Park
came from,

In 1965 I was in the Sons of Confederate Veterans. We camped
out at MacArthur park during the CW Centennial and made musket
balls for curious on-lookers.

This is one of those I found over 50 years later,

Hope you enjoyed Camp Shaver,

That is some great info.

I never would have known.

Thank you very much,

Nice finds Tabdog. It must have been a fun hunt. Thanks for adding the photos too, I love looking at our history.

Maybe I've beeen watching too many paranormal TV shows, but in that reunion photo it almost looks like an image of a woman walking down some stairs (lower right hand corner, just to the right of the cigar a man is holding over a rail). Loosks like you can see a neckline and what appears to me to be a dress (light colored). Just thought I would throw that out there (especially since I rarely see images in photos when people claim they see them!).

Thanks for sharing that tabdog, the pictures from that event are great.Man o man , now that's a few rows of tents right there. The hot air balloon looks like it's being tethered by a bunch of whiskey jugs :headbang: :headbang: And Mr. Shaver ----the stories he must have told-

Big medal on his coat ... and all those buttons ...

Thanks again.... great post

Looks like an Owlly Cat! That is odd, for sure. Not sure if I'd want to pet it or run from it.
