Got to camp on the west side of the San Luis Valley last night. Good weather, but had rain showers come in over night. Just barely enough to settle the dust where I was at. Course when I got back up around 10,000ft. that turned to snow on top of the snow we already have.

when I was younger I went out once a month like clockwork.... then I moved to the woods and now the deer and birds etc. come to me! I realized a big part of why I went camping was the wildlife.

Are you needing to make reservations to camp now?

Yeah if you want to camp in those campgrounds, Penitente and Zapata you have to. However, on the west side of the valley there's lots of free dispersed camping. You can camp right in the vicinity of Penitente. I argued with BLM about that reservation system, particularly that they pulled that up with no public notice and they should have at least a couple of FCFS sites in the campgrounds. They responded with some e-mails that pretty much said they didn't have anything to do with that decision and have a nice day. I guess that's the future. Lots of our areas are being overrun and overused. Forest Service is considering banning dispersed camping in some areas due to overuse and people not taking care of them. They already have along the road to Montezuma east of here, where I used to camp a few times.

I guess nothing good last forever. We've just grown so much in population in the state to where new rules and regulations must be put in place. At least I got to enjoy some the freedoms that existed 40 years ago now. Wonderful memories is what I have. Folks today haven't a clue of anything better.

We may all want to make some reservations soon. See your property tax yet? I was over at the office last night and the property manager and I were lookin at what they did for this place. Assessment went from 5 million to over 10 million. That's without any sort of major improvements to the place in the last year.
