I was going through my finds and realized that one of my hunks of waste iron had a stamped marking/medallion in it. I looked at it and cant quite tell exactly what it is. It says H. VAN WART (possibly a name) WARRANTED written in the middle, NEW YORK written across the bottom, and an eagle just above the word warranted. I apologize for the poor condition it is in. I did my best to get some of the grime off of it.

Looks like it may have been a key fob at one time

Possibly from a Henry Van Wart anvil, or maybe scale? ...but looking around online, both of these are just stamped on a major component, rather than having a tag adhered.
-Welcome to TreasureNet! I hope we can solve it for you.

1st - I noticed this was your very first post - so, Welcome Aboard Nathan6309! You didn't list your state (or country) in your profile. So, you might consider jumping over to Sub-Forums: Select Your Area.... and selecting location information (i.e., clubs, hunts, finds, legends, maps, etc.) directly related to your state (or country). You might also consider adding your state (or country) to your displayed profile (SETTINGS -> EDIT PROFILE) so if you ask a question, etc. - people may have more success helping you (if necessary)...

2nd - I searched Google and found Henry Van Wart (1784 - 1873) was an American businessman who became a British citizen by special act of Parliament. He founded the Birmingham Stock Exchange and had four children: William (1812 - 1868), Matilda (b. 1814), Marianne (b. 1816), and George (b. 1817). He set up a profitable business in Birmingham exporting the city's goods to America ... and largely to the south. Van Wart was friends with Louisiana businessman Frederick W. Tilton, who became Van Wart's agent in New Orleans. He sold thousands of buttons to the Confederacy. The buttons were intended to come south through the blockade, but it is uncertain if any arrived before the end of the war...

I don't know what it is but I did find a little information on H. Van Wart.

Henry Van Wart (& Son), Birmingham. Listed in 1818 under merchants, Britiannia Bldg. & in 1823, address not given. In 1825 Henry Van Wart appeared as a merchant at 23 Summer Row and continues alone thru 1831. In 1833 they appear as Henry Van Wart & Son at same address thru at least 1854. In the latter years they were "American merchants" in the business directory. By 1860 they were Van Wart, Son & Co.thru at least the civil war era.same address.
So. it would appear that your piece dates around 1818 -1860s. My guess is the latter part of this period but it is just a guess and I don't have anything to base it on.

I see VPNavy posted while I was typing my reply so you have more information. Hopefully this will lead to an identification.

Saw disc / medallion... ?

Yea I Should have Realized, he has no Info on Size.

Word on it may be WARRANTED But Unless it's a Rare one, Warranted Would follow the Curve , not be Straight Across.
and should be Threaded on one side, I'm thinking Both sides are the same like a "hanging Thingy" would Have . :dontknow:

Also Looks like 2 Piece With the Edge being Separated.

problem with My Guess, I never seen a Key Fob with WARRANTED on it :laughing9:

I tried this, only professional saw people tell me it doesn't match any hand saw brands.

Again, how big or small is it? Also, there appears to be a rim around part of it suggesting that it may have set into another piece from the backside.

I don't have it with me right now, but it is an oval shape and is about the same size as a nickel. It was actually set into and soldered into an iron piece, but I took it out so I could see it better. Sorry about that, I will try to put up another picture with dimensions.

Please post a picture of the iron it was soldered into as well, if you still have it.
