Attached are 3 pics of the button next to a dime. Pics are front, back, and side view. Dug about 7" deep in Virginia's lovely red clay. I'd sure appreciate any ideas. Thanks!

Thank you Mud Hut! Looks like you're spot on! I'd never heard of a railroad date nail until now, so I just looked them up. Being as I'm less than 100 yards from a pretty old railroad, a 1922 rr datenail sure makes sense. Thank you so much!
