It's tough to tell in the pics, the crystal structure reminds me of garnet, but I can't say.

Ya, looks like a grossular garnet. Where did you find it?

Would tumbeling clean it up like the lower picture? Or is there a different process?

Tumbling would likely break it up. You can try hand polishing it with emery paper but I'd just keep it as it is.
