Looks like part of a flintlock mechanism, how big is it?. Your wife's gonna get mad about that towel by the way.

No wife..girlfriend though ;DOnly 18 right now....Anyways on the long side it measures about a foot, and where it starts to tee off maybe around 8in

To big to be from a flintlock, try and clean it up a little.

If it was by or in the canal could it be some type of anchor that is plunged or hooked into the ground ?

Maybee some kind of chain lockdown for cargo like on the 18 wheelers ???

When we dug it up it was buried under some pretty large roots from an old tree....So I was thinking it had to be kind of old...?

looks like an old pick that rusted and broke in the round part where the handle went in to it

My friend who was with me when we found this thought maybe it could be a slave lock or something that was used to put around their feet?? Anyone think this is possible?

Hard to tell, but if thats a pivot at the end of the bend, then its possible. Probably your best bet is to clean it at least enough to see what it is. I don't have the link handy and I'm on my way out the door, but someone here should know where the electrolysis information is for cleaning iron.

I gotta go with Geo4472 on the pick head theory.
