I found this iron object at a site of an old creamery it's 11inches long and has these hinged parts and looks hand made. I have no clue what it is. What do you guys think.- Justin

I don't think that's what it is. I found it sticking out of an old stacked stone foundation. It does look like a sconce though. But if it was a sconce why would the bottom part open?

Probably to break the melted wax so you can remove the remains of the candle.

I retract my silly observation.cudamark is prolly spot on...mid 1800s to early 1900s was the time when a machine, tool,or gadget for virtually everything was in full swing...excellent idea cuda !!..:notworthy:

Is it possible that it mounts as is , to have flame clearance from wall ?

That's how I think it works but it has a twist in it so the candle holder part is crooked.

What type of metal is it made of?

I'm pretty sure it's cast iron.

Should be able to bend it without heat, 2 pipe wrenches opposite each other on ground

Cast wouldn't bend , it's prolly wrought iron cast would've cracked before it twisted to current position

Your trying to straighten the bracket ? The cage looks cast but the bracket is wrought! Do you have a bench vise ?

Yeah I'm pretty sure the bracket is wrought iron. And sconce its self is cast.yes I do have a bench vise I'm just afraid of breaking it because its a neat piece.

It looks like the bracket is just twisted at the top few inches , can you orient just the bent part of the bracket in the vice you'll be able to get most if the bend out just by closing vice, you won't break cage because no part of cast will be in vice, you can wrap a small towel around cage to protect from drops
