Here are my finds! Thanks. The first is a 1943 wheat penny.
In 1864, A wounded cannonear returned home to Auburn, Alabama from the war of northern agression and bought 169 acres from an Indian, Charlie. His name was John Frazier Heard. I live in the old heard sub-division. His great grand-daughter is the Principle at A local school which is also in Heard sub-division. I can only hunt an hour about 2-3 times a week but I asked her permission. She said yes but she would be interested in the finds. I have been hunting the home yard for 3 days, very small areas at a time. I have found enough rust to build a battleship and very few coins, but day before yesterday I was dinging and digging just off the front porch in the azaleas. Ding, a dollar reading about 4 inches down and it turned out to be the top to a caulking tube a few minutes later, ding, another dollar signal, a rusty cookie cutter. Next came a ding again about 4 to 6 inches down. It was a 1921 silver dollar. I used to md over 30 years ago and found lots of silver of course but I have been hunting for 3 months now and this is my first, I was so excited. As I was running out of time in this particular portion of the yard. I hit a large metal object and almost did not dig it after all the tin cans and license tags etc. I dug 2 inches and hit a pipe that I thought had been driven in the ground at an angle. I gave it a yank and to my surprise it was a zinc cannon very heavy. When I gave it to Mrs T, tears came in her eyes and she said she had seen a picture of Great grand-dad standing at the mantle and a small cannon in the picture on the mantle. I felt really good to give back something to a family See pictures.
I have a little more to the story. Mrs. T stopped me as I was dropping off my daughter at school this am and she told me how the cannon got to where I found it. It seems her 74 year old brother used to play in the yard with the cannon because grandpa gave it to him and since it is a sandy soil he probably lost it as children will do. I have a large collection of matchboxes that I have dug in the last 3 months. She said she is wrapping it up to give to him as a present. She said I will give you the credit. I told her we try to give anything of sentimental value to the ones who should have it.
