Fairly certain it's not a scabbard tip finial from the lower shape. It is heavy for its size (8g) probably lead or pewter. In a couple of the pics there is the remains of a thin ferrous remnant at the attachment point.

Agreed. Or off a percussion cap box . . .

Nice relic. I think I might have tossed it away. This is why it good to have knowledge like you do .Well done

yeah, used like a button almost. leather strap for the top of the box with a slit that this held the top on with.

Nice dig Yak :icon_thumleft: Usually the lead and pewter finials are Confederate!!

Like civilman1 said It's also my opinion that the Pewter & Lead ones were Confederate .

Looks to be pewter ?

Oh also my opinion .. as Parsonwalker stated it's likely off a Cap box.

Keep'em Coming.

I was wondering if anyone would notice that. Found a couple of articles stating Union ones were generally Brass and if lead or pewter, most likely Confederate.

Yeah I'm wondering if the soldier carved them out of lead or were they made lead? I've seen them lead but carved by a soldier and only see brass ones that weren't carved.

Thanks D!! That's the 1st one I've ever dug. I've also been over that area 100+ times with the AT Pro and must have considered it a 'pull tab' like signal. It was a solid 11-12 with the Equinox 800.

I'm thinking pewter as well. Very grainy/crusty like feel versus a bullet from same dirt.

If memory serves me right I believe that I dug a 'larger more rounded' one that was made from lead & looked Cast but then again my recall is not "photographic ".
