carving at bottom of hollow

Found this rock carving at the bottom of a hollow along an old railroad grade, what does it mean?

That could be just a mason's mark left by a stonemason who worked the site. BUT, keep checking out the area for other marks and keep a notebook on your finds. In the "old days" the individual mason had his own mark he'd put on stones he'd cut for building purposes because that's how he got paid. (by the number of stones he's cut and dressed)
I did a bing search of the phrase "masons signs and symbols" and got over 8 million hits.

I think Shortstack is right,
It appears to be a mason's mark.
None of the signs and symbols in my collection correspond in any way with this one.
Good advice though to check out the surrounding area very closely to see if there are any other marks around.

Thats pretty cool guys, the name of this hollow is Stone Quarry!!!

I would have to agree. These marks can be found in many places. Think of it as a signature or one man's brand. This one seems to be in very good shape. It is possible to trace these markings to a person and maybe who he was working for. but that could take years. If you can find a cut stone with a mark like this one, it might look good at the house. Nice find though.

Good advise from my two fellow trackers...however
before you file this one away as a curiosity, or just a masons mark, SS was correct in his assessment about masons marks and getting paid but that was for a cut and dressed stone! not a unquarried wall!
So try something just to make sure,... take your compass with you, next time you go there.
1. Are you looking North when you are looking at this wall ?
2. if you are then this sign is pointing at the Cardinal Directions.
3. Doubt that a masons mark would be so Oriented.
4.These two signs are both Individual classic signs,
5. the square is a well used sign in Spanish, KGC and others .
6 the diamond is also a critical sign.
7.both together should attract much attention.

Yes, the old tracks run north and south and this indeed faces you while you walk north! someone else mentioned the compass thing and the opening on the triangle means go East?

Now that we know this possible sign has a North orientation it shows perhaps to go East, as you say.
however it is certainly not a old Spanish mark,

As meticulous as this sign is.. it would make not sense for them or him to leave the Eastern diamond point unfinished or not completely closed.

So there it is, the only way to confirm this as a real sign is to go East and see what you can see.
Don't over look a mark on a tree, as this has the appearance (time wise) as being KGC.

Again , I might be all wet , but I stayed dry out on the limb I was on..lol
having more fun than a human being should be allowed to have..

As meticulous as this sign is.. it would make not sense for them or him to leave the Eastern diamond point unfinished or not completely closed. Also - this could be a stylized "C" and may mean "go east 100 measurement units, ( vara, chains, yards, cordels, ect.)

There is a triangle; an "E" on it's side; and an "L" to the east.........about 6 feet. Stay dry.
