Twitch's thread about 1943-D war nickels had me itching to try the casino, which is now a farther drive than in years past.

Searching thru $75 worth and among a handful of pre-1960 was this beauty:

Oh boy, it's Nic-a-Date fun when I get home.

After a drop or two, check out the date that appeared:

It's a Type 2, but alas no mintmark. Sweet!

Now the stats:

  • First buffalo I've found in slots since 3/23/14 (1927)
  • First time I've used Nic-a-Date since 3/13/11 (1918-S)
  • Last 1913-P Type 2 I found was on 12/6/05 (also a Nic-a-Date)

Nice score on that buff! I did get a 40% half once a couple years ago playing blackjack at Red Rock I think it was. I saw it in the dealers stack of halves as I was playing off to the side and asked for $5 worth of halves. The dealer looked confused, but complied.

An actual nickel story from Vegas:

You know how the Silverton will have a flea market like once or twice a month? I saw an old nickel book there that had a bunch of junk nickels and one war nickel. I asked the shop keep how much he wanted for it and he said $1. We agreed. I got home and punched out the junk nickels for a total of $1.40 + a war nickel! Not a bad day at the flea market!
