Yes, there are caves in the mountains in the upper NW part of the state.

We don't have limestone. We really don't have any natural caves. Any you may find are likely gold or isinglass mines. These are especially dangerous and will collapse if you are not very careful. They are usually not worth the risk. I've only found one that was somewhat safe to explore. It is now blocked.

Supposedly there are actually some there. There's even a book on the subject, but I've got no link to it!

Most all are harmless , but upstate S.C. has Timber Rattlers & Copperheads. I don't know of any other poisonous ones in that region & I lived there for 50 years.
