Cellar hole

Went out to a cellar hole for a couple hours that I found while hunting. 2 tomback 1 gold plated that says W.& G Change. Extra rich. Any info on this would be appreciated the other 2 buttons have bench marks but can't make them out yet. Thinking I found a mid 1700 to early 1800s cellar hole. I'd appreciate your thoughts. Thanks.

Definitely an early site there! Finds are very consistent with mine at late 1700s locations.

Tombacs are a good indicator of mid 1700s to early 1800s like you said.

Yeah, grasshopper is correct in his thinking, I'd spend allot of time out there for sure. I like when I find those gold gilded buttons usually means I'm going to see some good stuff. Those buttons are nice ones that you found, good shape, probably because they have not been fertilized for over a hundred years.

Those are generally 1810-1840ish

Nice digs man, and a great start to a new site. Buttons are only indicative of the age when they’re dropped. Lol. So yeah, real difficult to say an age, but a safe bet would be early 1800’s on the Tombacs despite likely being made much earlier. I’m a fan of letting finds paint the picture for me, but I try to err on the conservative side when dating items. Another indicator would be that lightly used gold gilt button, likely made during the “golden age of flat buttons” in the 1830’s. Call it less than 10 years normal wear, which makes it 1840’s. Conservatively I’d say your site has a range of 1800-1840’s. And that’s just the beginning...

In other words - It’s Lookin’ Good!!!
