Next dig i helped out was the excavation of parts of the rampart and ditch of a huge celtic ring fort. It's the largest we have in our area and dates to the time Celts fought the Roman invaders. Even if there is no proof Caesar wrote about this particular fort in his 'De bello Gallico', there is still a good chance it is the one. There are a couple big battles documented here.

The brave artefact sniffing dog in front of the cut rampart.

Here you can see the layers of the rampart and the turned over dry stone wall on the inside of the fort.

Another cut on near the old entrance of the fort.

Compared with the first pic it's easy to see the rampart was build the same way here too.

Very informative, cool. Any metal or pottery finds?

Very little pottery, no metal. Most till now is charcoal. That's good because it will help a lot dating the damage at the rampart. You can see a bit of the charcoal layer as a dark band under the bigger stones left on the first pic.

pretty awesome work on some very awesome sites

That's a lot of diggin! Cudos to the puppy for being so vigilant. Strange you get few artifacts. They must be nearby.

Very cool. Makes me think how much history we walk over every day.
