A good friend of mine from work brought these in today, hoping I might be able to give him some information on two bottles that he has. I told him I didn't know much about them, but I knew where to go to find out. ;)

A friend of his gave these to him about ten years ago. He said they were flasks from the Civil War era. The only other thing that we know about them is that they were dug up somewhere around the New Orleans area. There are no markings on them.

My friend would like to know if these are indeed Civil War era bottles, and any other information that you could provide would be appreciated. Thank you in advance!

Pimplenin...

Those two bottles are indeed whiskey flasks. The first one is commonly called a "pumpkin seed" flask. It's small enough to hide in your hand and take a swig from it. The other is a bit larger, but may be a picnic flask of some type. Also primarily for whiskey, but it may have had other uses. These are pretty common flasks and they are not "Civil war era" flasks. They are more likely from the 1880's time frame. Close to the Civil War, but not that close.

Hope this helps you out a little,

Wayne

are there pontil marks on the bottom? did you take a pic of the bottoms?

Thank you for the information so far. The flasks probably belonged to some carpetbagger or crooked New Orleans politician. ;)

I'll take some photos of the bottom of the bottles and post them tonight.

no pontils, thanks for the pics, nice flasks

SM Diver is correct in his ID of these bottles. The shorter one is the classic pumpkinseed flask and the taller one is a Jo-Jo style picnic flask. Very nice bottles. I'd have been happy to find them.

This link will give you more info about them. http://www.sha.org/bottle/liquor.htm#Picnic Flasks Scroll down about 3/4 of the page.
