On day two with my new AT Pro, I found a finial in my yard, my fourth to date. When I posted the first two finial, readers said they were most likely bullet pouch finials. When I found the 3rd one, the consensus was not the same. I found all of them, including the fourth, a few feet apart (5ft to 6ft) and also in the vicinity of where I found two Civil War bullets, a Wilson Cleaner, 2 musket balls and grapeshot.

While I'd like to think these are pouch finials, I really don't know. Given the amount of fire pits and old animal bones I've found, I believe my land may have been a very brief makeshift CW camp sight. If so, these finds would make sense but one or two of the finials seem slightly different. I know there were different versions of finials on pouches but these are generally the same.

One looks to have a black finish with a thicker base and a deeper threaded base. Two have hints of gold/gilt or brass finish. The size and style seems right but if they're not pouch finials, what are they?

Yes, that's what someone said last time but then why would one be different? :icon_scratch: Also, one has black paint and two have what look to be remnants of brass. Do the spikes on dog collars come unscrewed? I have no clue.

Thanks for chiming in! ; )

So now I guess I need to get that coil. I better try to read the manual first. :tongue3:

Dog collar spikes come in a few varieties, some are screw on, some are rivet back. I'm fairly sure that's what you have there, different types from different collars, or from a rock and roll jacket....

They are ornamental pull nobs. I bought same from Home Depot back in the day.

Just trying to be helpful with info. American-made civil war era cartridge-box (and cap-box, etc.) finials are attached by riveting... not screw-on like what you found.

Just a theory but if they were pointed pull knobs, someone ran into them one too many times, unscrewed them and threw all four as hard as they could to be sure they never returned.

Or knobs from the top of a metal umbrella stand.

Here's a pic of some repro finials, I'm positive those are dog collar spikes, I have a bunch of them. Not trying to disparage your finds, and I'll bet there's still a lot of good stuff to find there from what you've got already

All good observations but gentlemen let me just say.... these are not curtain rod finials. As a woman I can tell you, none of you know how to decorate. Otherwise you'd be hanging curtains with rods the size of toothpicks. : ) Laugh, laugh, giggle, giggle. Calling this one Solved. Cheers :cat:

What kind of animal bones did you find? Perhaps you found Fido and his old collar
