Your button is a flat button from early to mid 1800's and it could have been worn by a soldier or a civilian. I have found them myself in some camps that I have hunted. During the Civil War a lot of soldiers wore civilian clothing especially early in the war. There really is no way to say a soldier wore it. It is still a great find. I love finding flat buttons as well.

Which is why a lot of the guys I used to dig with call them coin buttons.

Well that would be misleading...a coin button is a button that was actually made from some type of coin..and actually your button says come back and hunt here some more there are more goodies waiting!!!!!!!
