Looking for advise on restoration of my boot pistol.
Found last weekend in western Maryland at cavalry battle site.
I have soaked it 3 days in evaporust with small amounts of rust removed.
Not the result I was hoping for
The first picture on rock was field found condition. The second picture with tape measure is after soap and water and last two are after 3 day soak in evaporust and light wire brushing.
Thanks Chuck. C1202F9E-2399-42EF-8AC8-36C46265D928.webp70AA86DF-8DCE-4A8C-84FF-12EAF7F3C1C9.webpF102B72E-393A-4262-BE58-43392BD6A7A1.webpC4D6E09A-05E8-49E5-9928-784202C275B1.webp

I would give it an electrolysis treatment if it were mine....looks stable enough to come out nicely.

Thanks for the advise VN

Not that I am trying to find the exact spot but was this found anywhere near Hagerstown? I grew up there but left in 1969 when I joined the Navy. I ended up here in south Georgia and have only been back to Md. a few times in the last 10years.

Yes near Hagerstown

Electrolysis but I would find out what to coat it with once you do thast I think wax of some sort

I have museum wax.

Awesome relic, congrats! :occasion14:

Very nice piece. I especially like how it's still cocked, probably lost in the heat of a battle. Electrolysis is the best option then use evaporust to get any the electrolysis won't remove.

Still cocked means still loaded. Not that its any danger but probably still has a ball in it

Here’s the pistol cleaned up a little. Just soaked in evaporust.DC6B645F-86BF-4AE6-9169-378DD589D9C2.webp
