here it is trying to figger out exactly who made it and what time frame its from -- on the front side it has a script type U L inside a C -- on the rear i can make out only some of the letters UN N L and under it -CHICAGO

that UL mark could be an older Underwriters Laboratories mark they have been around for over 116 years.

thanks to DAROOFA its solved to me -- a union club of chicago -marked knife handle * --the area the item was found at had union troops camped there during the civil war and freed slaves also lived there during the war as well post civil war -- the UNION LEAGUE clubs was formed up during the civil war (1862) -- the various "union clubs" having 2 nillion members overall by wars end * -they were a major factor in lincon getting reelected in 1864 -- this item is most likely "war related" in my view as it would have been carried by union troopers or supplied to freedmen as dining tools during the war and post war era.
