Civil War item?

Me and my husband went metal detecting near a major Civil War battle area today and found this along with about 25 CW bullets, a cuff button, and other CW items. We have no idea what it is. We were guessing it might be something off of a gun or cannon, but we really have no idea? Does anyone have any ideas?

Looks sorta like the "spinner" out of a rein terret.

Metaldetectingmomma, I see that's your first post here at T-Net... so, welcome to the What Is It forum, the best place on the internet to get unknown objects CORRECTLY identified.

MudHut is right, it is the "spinner" from a Fly or Head Terret. Those were a decoration which fit on the top of a buggy-pulling horse's collar. Sorry, but the version you found is from after the civil war. See the early-1900s advertisement below.
