I bought this piece for $20, and I'm glad I did! After an hour and a half of searching on the Internet I was able to find one of these in a museum. It's a U.S. Navy surgeon's hat insignia from the American Civil War. Considering that it's Navy it would have to be extremely rare. If anyone wants to post their opinion of what it might be worth, I wouldn't mind.

No idea on value, but it is without a doubt a great find.
 

They only made them for a year (From January 29,
1864 to January 14, 1865). So there is probably very few left.
