Being a relic-digger myself, please believe me that I always hope I can give a fellow relic-digger good news. Therefore, DeeHerd, I genuinely regret to have to tell you it is definitely not a civil war artillery projectile.
1- It is much too thin-walled.
2- All of the "bullet-shaped" civil war Field Artillery caliber (4-inches in diameter or less) explosive shells had their fuze in the nose's tip. Although there is some kind of peculiar-looking metal showing inside the tip of your mystery-object's pointed nose, there is no evidence of it on the outside. I cannot explain that peculiarity. But I'm sure it is not an artillery fuze.

Assuming the object is made of iron... the corrosion is very strange. The only times I've seen it has been on saltwater-marsh/swamp dug cast-iron. Did you dig your mystery-object in a saltmarsh/swamp?

It was recovered on a wooded ridge. I also wondered why it was in such bad shape. Revolutionary War era? (Just kidding).

I sincerely appreciate Mr. Cannonball Guy's response and expert opinion.

Anyone else have an idea what it could be?

It's an odd one for sure.... I got to wondering if maybe it's an old crucible? Or maybe the slag that had hardened inside a ceramic crucible?
