Civil War Relic Hunt Gives Me My First CORPS BADGE!

Greetings everyone,

A buddy and I got out to a well hunted Civil War camp site today for a few hours. The relics were VERY few and far between, but I did manage to get a nice .69 caliber "plug cavity" minie ball, the remnants of a soldier's pocket knife, and a very interesting cross shaped piece of brass that I strongly suspect is a 6th Corps Badge. It was pretty crumpled up when I found it, and I might have been a little too aggressive in trying to bend it back. We have hunted this site many times over the last few years and have found quite a few bullets and buttons, but very little else comes out of the ground. I got a nice US cartridge box plate from this site the first time we hunted it. My buddy's finds for the day were a fired .58 minie, an unreadable large cent, and a toasted Spencer cartridge. It was definitely a great day to be out in the woods! Thanks for looking and HH

Love the relics you found! Quite a day you had!

congrats on the "great day", those kinds of finds would have me pretty stoked for quite a while

I can see it , can also see it as a "Maybe'' but it does look cut .???

Looking again it's bigger than I thought it was at first, so 'You may have a Camp made badge' I hope so.

Always love the 'Big 69's' plug cavity is a +.

Wish those knives held up better or could be re-assembled.
As they were a Soldier's personal property.
Great hunt guy's.

Thanks guys! It turns out that the bullet measures .705, which would have been used with the .71 caliber Austrian Lorenz rifle. Now I need to get out there and find some more of them ;)

.705 huh.
Cool only seen them super big boys in the books.
I wonder how common they are?

Also after looking through some magazines, books, and computer , i'm 95% sure you do have a corps badge.

My opinion really does not matter tho :laughing7:

What do you think it was made from? 'with the circle & all'?

Thanks!

Davers, the two .705s that I've found are the only ones I've ever seen. I guess they're pretty uncommon. As for the corps badge, I'm pretty certain it is one as well. It's made from brass and is clearly hand made/cut. There is some solder on one side, so it probably had a pin attached to it at one time. I'm pretty happy with it! Hopefully we can get back out to that site again soon.

Nice hunt saving some History...Congrats and GL next outing.

IS THAT A PERCUSSION CAP? MAN NEET FINDS

Thanks!
