Civil War shield marked "34"

Dug this tonight in the same field I found the CS saddle shield. Figured I'd have no trouble identifying but after flipping through my books I'm still at a loss. How would this thing attach and to what? I'm thinking the number 34 refers to an infantry regiment (a lot of infantry buttons found in same field) but that's a best guess. The crack before the number 3 could be concealing the letter I or number 1 or nothing. Not sure. Can't find anything that resembles this piece. Thanks for looking. :notworthy:

Are there any markings or attachment devices on the back? I believe the crack is actually a 1 that was stamped to hard. If no soldermarks or attachment devices I'd have to say it's probably a baggage tag or something along those lines.

Nothing on the back. The configuration is very military to me but I could be wrong. Is there an available image of a baggage tag that might resemble this? Appreciate the look.

A baggage tag is just a guess. I've dug them in cviil war camps but they were all round. There was one spot which a store house for uniforms burnt down and we found several baggage or claims tags in the area of that. It looks civil war period or close to it. Hopefully someone will be able to give you a positive ID on it.

Making one more attempt to get additional thoughts on this thing. It could drive me to drinking. :occasion14:
