Civil War Spur experts needed! A quick hunt on the battlefield.

Got a quick hunt in this morning before the rain set in, and I am rather pleased with the results! Got 5 fired 3-Ringers, a fired .36 ball, a fired and smashed .69 round ball, a shell fragment, and this SPUR! I got so excited when I saw the tell-tale green patina looking at me from the bottom of the hole, and for an instant thought I might have finally gotten a plate. Though it is not a plate, I am still thrilled with the find! Could someone with more knowledge than me (which is a very large audience) identify the spur? And if it is Union, just tell me it is Confederate anyways so that I can feel better about it . Thanks fellas!

It does look quite similar, except the "neck" (for lack of knowing the actual name) on mine is shaped somewhat differently. Perhaps it is just bent!

I have dug many of these over 45 years of relic hunting. It is in fact a 1859 yankee cavalry spur less the rowel. They also made a similar spur with a gutter back or groove on the inside. Some of these are also arsenal marked. Most all CS spurs were more square neck. Some Southern spurs were private purchase or were prior to the war manufactured such as the 2 different one I found in a CS camp pictured here.

Thanks for the positive ID! There were no Union Cavalry actively involved in this battle, and I found it almost at the base of a STEEP ravine leading into a deep creek. Wonder how it ended up there!

Well, that seems logical! You'd have to see this area though, it is extremely rugged and hard to get to even on foot hence why I was stumped

Somewhat familiar with the lay of the land if you are in the Brandon area...bunch of friends are Mississippi pastors, and got to "tour" the state back in the 1980s-now visiting with them.

Could be either a capture or a later Union occupation loss. Any number of things come to mind. Since water is always an attractor and necessity during wartime, it is also a great place to relic hunt. Humans and non-humans need it, and stay nearby it.
