My dad found this awhile back, In a promising spot that was fairly close to camps.

any idea's? i saw the same design on a civil war navy button but the eagle was turned the opposite way

I am not an expert but by looking at it I think it is a more modern navy button perhaps like 1960's or so I could get proved very wrong though. I am sure someone else that has more expertise here will jump in.

I am going to offer some opinions, then - hope more folks help out that are smarter than I am.

The back of the button features a self shank, post CW... and I'm thinking it's a navy styalized blazer fashion button.  

Maybe not though - and i'd love to know what you think the letters are on the tip of the shank there... I see some writing.  Also, with a toothpick and some patience, see if there is more writing on the back of it by picking the crud of it, to help determine a maker.  It looks blank, but ya never know till you clean it up a little bit more.  

It look like it held some gold gilt too...

I think txkickergirl is close to correct.

on the shank it says W B CO, with some help of friends, and everyone here on Tnet. comes from the waterbury buttons. Right now im trying too pick the crud off the back and see if there are any other markings on the back

W. B. Co. - Very cool... I know they made some US Army Great Seal buttons with that very same shank. If it's Navy, it's not too old as buttons go... but it could be military issue I guess.

Looks like USN. WWII
Partial spread wing Eagle looking left, perched on anchor over cannon balls, ring of 13 stars over ridged backing,
2 piece brass with brass soldered loop shank. 23/32" diameter
Back may be marked: Vanguard Corp New York
