50 mesh is what it just went through..so now it "classified" to 50 mesh.

whatever fits through the 30 mesh..is 30 mesh and so on.

so the material that does not go through the 50 mesh screen is still 50 mesh material?

I would call it minus 30 plus 50 mesh. Take away the 50 screen and it can be simply described as minus 30 mesh. By inserting the 50 screen then what passes that screen would be minus 50.... plus (insert your screen size) etc., etc.

on my own i was calling the stuff that did not go through the 50 mesh as minus 50, what goes though is plus 50. bottom line, i was not as wrong as i thought i might be.

no its whatever size it was screened through. if your actually grading it there would be the larger grade mentioned.

I just call what doesn't fit through the screen "oversize" or by the number of the last screen it went through.

if you have a # 30 # 50 # 100 screens.

You would end up with Plus 30 , 30 mesh,50 mesh, minus hundred grades You don't need the +/- when that size will get sized again. its just graded by the screen it went through last.

Usually that type of screening would be referred to as #30 minus and then #50 minus.
As mentioned by GW the last screen it passed through.

Typical sieve analysis gradations are reported as percent passing a certain size screen.
