Don't think I've ever seen one with a huge gaping mouth like that.

It's almost a caricature, which points towards an amateur art project piece as said... with perhaps some functional purpose. It looks moderately old though (or just extremely dirty). Have you tried smelling it or looking for any residues in the mouth cavity which suggest it might have seen use as an ashtray, incense burner or whatever.
