So i detected an abandoned mine in Big Bear, CA. Had to drive about a mile on a dirt road in the mountains to get there, maybe less, but it was fun and I cleaned out a TON of trash from the sight and didn't find much other than a small square nail and a really old fired shotgun shell. Headstamed climax, US, 16(ga). Definatly from the period when the gold mine was in use. That place has been thoroughly detected in the past.

I had to climb a somewhat steep rock cliff with my folded up to find 60 in one hand and my detecting fanny pack with all of my tools attached. That was a fun climb but it really freaked my wife out that I did it haha.

Here's the old paper walled (degraded and mostly gone except for the remains of it in the copper base) 16Ga Climax shotgun shell. (shotguns give me freedom boners so the name fits lol)

Those things sure sound good, and it's neat to do the research on them. Here is a link I like: Shotgun

Nice area. We enjoyed living in Big Bear for 3 Months in an RV.
Did you ever visit the old Hanging Tree----------It is probably gone by now but we visited it in '93.
16 GA. is my favorite Shotgun. Too bad they aren't popular now. It's either 12GA or 20GA now days.

No we didn't visit the hanging tree but I did go take an impromptu tour of the haunted Captians Anchorage, formerly owned by Andy Devine, and haunted by his bookkeeper...

I spent most of my time catching bulkhead at the lake. They are tasty little guys!

Well I was wrong about not finding any silver in big bear... Just realised that I found a 40% silver 1966 Kennedy half dollar.... Thought it was clad...

Pictures to go e shortly

....I thought I had that mine all cleaned out !
Fun stuff . . . Freedom boner , he he he

What did you find there? I free climbed the steep cliffs to get to where it looks like miners may have slept.

Cool find! Sounds like a fun adventure, that's why I'm addicted, it don't get better than exploring and treasure hunting in nature! Even better if not a soul around! HH
