Coin help

I am new to the whole coin thing. I do mostly relic hunting. What year did common american coins stop being made of silver?? someone told me around 1964 is this right. Sorry if this is dumb question.

By the way, the only nickels that contain silver are those minted during World War II. They're easy to identify because they have a big mintmark (P, D, or S) above the dome of Monticello:
