Hi,
I wish the folks at the banks in Eugene were nicer......here's a paraphrase of a recent conversation I had at Liberty Bank:
Me: Hello, I'd like to buy $50 worth of dimes, please.
They: Do you have an account here?
Me: No, I'm just trying to buy some dimes.
They: We don't do that.
Me: Oh. Why not?
They: We are here to serve people who have accounts.
Me: Oh, so if I get an account, can I do it?
They: No.
Me: But you just told me if I had an account, I could do it.
They: No, I didn't say that. I said you couldn't do it because you didn't have an account.
Me: But that's what I said you said.
They: No, even if you had an account, you couldn't do it, because if we did it for you, we would have to do it for everyone.
Me: So what you're saying is, it does me no good to have an account here.
They: That's right, if all you want to do is buy rolls of coins.
Me: So how does anyone ever get $50 worth of dimes, according to your policy?
They: They don't, not here.

Fortunately I belong to a couple of nice credit unions, but even then, one of the tellers the other day said, "if you're looking for old coins, why don't you just go to the coin store?" I explained that things there cost at least 7 times face value, and I was willing to spend my own time searching; in fact, I thought it was fun! It's like a treasure hunt, or a fishing expedition; you never know what you might come up with. She just rolled her eyes and gave me minimum service, making it very clear she resented what she considered was a waste of her time. Now I feel a little guilty even going in there and taking her "precious" time or making others wait in line while I just try to buy rolls of coins. What's even worse is trying to turn them in. I bring in a big coffee can of coins, and I see other people sigh because they know this is going to take a while. Anyway, I'm not giving up, but as I said in the beginning, I just wish folks in Eugene-Springfield Oregon were a bit more friendly.
