These were found recently while detecting my back yard. I showed the other in another post as I was looking to ID it but now I'm wondering about the big one? Is that a coin? What type? Why is the hold on the side? Any information would be helpful. Thanks!

I wish I had a backyard like that, lol. That's a Carlous the III 2 Reales coin from 1780. Minted in Spain or colonies of Spain (i.e. Mexico)

They were commonly used in America in the 1700s up to the mid-1800s.

Why the hole it it and why on the side?
 
They'd do that to keep the coin from getting lost by putting multiple through a string.

Thank you! Makes sense as it's on the side so wouldn't look right on a chain.
 
IMO, coin is 1790 not 1780. Why? Because the assayer's initials are FM (1790); and in 1780 they were FF.
