Recently bought a White coinmaster 4000/d series 2 metal detector at a yardsale for $5.00.
I downloaded a manual and I'm trying to set it up accordingly. They say there is a true null point in the disc mode and to use the mineral sample supplied to set it properly. Since I don't have a sample, how do I set it up. Also the unit didn't have a battery holder to hold the six penlite battery's, so I went to radioshack and all I could find was a holder for eight batteries so I bought that. Does it make difference? will it harm the unit? could I use six good batteries and two dead ones????

I'm an old retired fart and this is my first with a metal detector, any and all comments would be appreciated. Is this detector OK for starting??? thanks much.

rjb1,

Wow! 5 bucks! What a deal! :o

I have a coinmaster 4000/D series 2. Now, I really haven''t used it in 20 years due to upgrades. I do have the original owners manual so if you have trouble obtaining one online, drop me an e with your address and I'd be glad to copy and send to you.

The true null point is for "quick ore sampling and hot rock identification", used primarily for prospecting purposes. If you're like me, you'll be using the detector to "coin shoot", detectin for rings, etc. don't get twisted-up worry-in about the mineral sample you don't have! In the early 80's, I bought my coinmaster used and it didn't have the mineral sample and it provided many hours of detectin for me.

Getch ya a handful of targets i.e. foil, pull tab, nickel, dime, quarter, dime, silver ring, gold ring, nail, etc etc. Put the detector on a table and let the coil hang over the edge. In the disc mode, pass different targets under the coil at different settings of the disc control knob.

Or place targets spaced out on plywood or other hard surface w/o any metal stuff under and work the disc control knob and sensitivity knob in the disc mode to get a feel for how she works.

You've got to maintain the same dc voltage. Call whites, they might still have parts/acc.

I'm planning to fire up my coinmaster soon and detect with it.

Attached is a pic of me coinmaster and the page out of whites 1982 catalog that advertises...... ::)

Good luck........ 8)

Hey rjb,

I stuck a 9V battery into my coinmaster and it seemed to work just fine! :o I'll have to take it for a test drive.

6-1.5V = 1-9V................ ::)
